Prop firm copy trading rules: what Apex, Topstep and Tradeify allow — and how to check
Before you copy trades across prop firm accounts, you need to know what your firm allows. The trouble is that rules differ from firm to firm, differ between evaluation and funded accounts at the same firm, and change over time. Anything quoted in a blog post — including this one — can be out of date by the time you read it.
So instead of repeating rule text that may have changed, this guide explains which questions every firm answers, where to find the answers for Apex, Topstep and Tradeify, and how CopyFlock's settings map onto each rule area. It is general information, not legal or compliance advice; your firm's current published rules always win.

Why copy trading rules matter
Prop firms fund traders based on individual skill. Rules about copying exist to stop practices the firm considers unfair — most commonly, one person trading accounts that belong to other people, or a trader taking opposite positions in two accounts so one is guaranteed to win. Breaking a rule can mean a failed evaluation, a denied payout or a closed account, even if every trade was otherwise fine.
Copying your own trades between your own accounts is a different thing from either of those, and many futures firms treat it differently. But 'many' is not 'all', and the details matter.
Seven questions to answer for every firm
- Are trade copiers allowed at all? Some firms say so explicitly; others only mention automated trading in general.
- Is copying between accounts you own allowed? This is usually the key question for traders running several evaluations.
- Is copying someone else's trades allowed? Following another trader, a signal service or a group is often restricted even where self-copying is fine.
- How many accounts can you hold or trade at once? Firms often cap the number of active evaluations and funded accounts per person.
- Is hedging across accounts allowed? Holding a long in one account and a short in another is commonly prohibited. This matters if you use a copier's reverse-trade feature.
- Do consistency or position-size rules apply per account? Copying makes accounts trade alike, but each is judged on its own.
- Are there restrictions on automation, news trading or specific devices? Some firms have rules about automated strategies, trading around major news, or where you trade from.
Where to find the answers
Every firm publishes its rules somewhere, usually in a help center or knowledge base plus the terms you agreed to when you bought the account. When you search, try these terms: copy trading, trade copier, multiple accounts, hedging, automated trading and prohibited practices.
If an article is unclear, ask the firm's support in writing — email or ticket rather than live chat — and keep the reply. A written answer that applies to your account type is worth far more than a forum post.
Apex Trader Funding: what to look up
Apex has long been popular with traders who run many accounts, and it publishes guidance on trade copiers and multiple accounts in its help center. When you check, look for: whether copiers are permitted on evaluation and Performance Accounts, the maximum number of accounts you may hold, its position on hedging across accounts, and any rules tied to payouts such as consistency requirements.
Apex accounts can be on Rithmic or Tradovate, and both connect to CopyFlock. See the Apex trade copier page and the step-by-step guide to copying trades across Apex accounts.
Topstep: what to look up
Topstep publishes detailed rules for Trading Combines, Express Funded Accounts and Live Funded Accounts in its help center. When you check, look for: how many accounts you may hold at each stage, whether trading the same strategy across your accounts is allowed, the rules on hedging between accounts, and how its loss limits and maximum position sizes apply to each account.
Topstep accounts trade on TopstepX and connect to CopyFlock through the ProjectX API. See the Topstep trade copier page.
Tradeify: what to look up
Tradeify also publishes its rules in a help center. When you check, look for: whether trade copiers are allowed on evaluation and funded accounts, the account limits per trader, any consistency rule that applies to payouts, and its position on hedging and on trading the same idea across accounts.
Tradeify accounts on Rithmic (system: Tradeify) connect to CopyFlock. See the Tradeify trade copier page.
How CopyFlock settings map to common rule areas
CopyFlock does not read or enforce firm rules. It gives you settings that make it easier to stay inside them:
| Rule area | Relevant CopyFlock setting | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Hedging across accounts | Reverse trades | Leave it off for followers at the same firm unless opposite positions are clearly allowed. |
| Maximum position size | Max contracts and per-symbol caps | Set each follower's cap to its account limit. |
| Drawdown and loss limits | Account protection | Set balance or equity minimums with a buffer; the follower is flattened and paused when reached. |
| Profit targets | Account protection (maximum) | Optionally flatten and pause an evaluation once it reaches its target. |
| News trading restrictions | Pause, symbol blacklist | Pause followers before restricted events. |
| Unprotected trades | Block trades without TP/SL | Only copy entries that carry a stop and target. |
| Copying other people | Account ownership | Connect only accounts you own; CopyFlock is built for copying your own trades. |
Note there is no daily loss limit or trading-hours feature in CopyFlock. Use account protection thresholds and pause/resume to cover those needs.
A safe default setup
- Only copy between accounts that are yours.
- Keep reverse trades off for prop accounts.
- Cap every follower at its account's contract limit.
- Set account protection minimums a little above each drawdown level and review them as trailing drawdowns move.
- Turn on copy TP/SL so every follower carries a stop.
- Re-read your firm's rules whenever your account type changes.
